12th Sunday of Ordinary Time - 23rd June 2024

REFLECTION

To appreciate the reaction of
the disciples of Jesus at the end of today’s gospel passage, it may be helpful
to explain the attitude of the Jewish people towards the sea and the elements
at that time. The Jewish people held the sea in great fear, somehow, they
believed that the sea was evil since it was the abode of all sorts of monsters
and evil forces.

Whenever there was a storm at sea, they believed that it was those forces baring their fangs in anger, with
or without being provoked. For them, only a force greater than they could
contain them and that force had to be divine. With this we can better appreciate
the reaction of the disciples.

Things got so bad at sea, the disciples were afraid for their lives, they feared that the boat will capsize,
and they would be drowned, believing that the evil forces inhabiting the sea
were at their highest level of anger and all these while Jesus was in the stern
of the boat asleep in the same boat which was amid violent storms. He got up
when his attention was drawn to the situation, rebuked the wind and ordered the
sea to be quiet and calm. They both obeyed, the wind dropped, and all was calm
again.

What Jesus did to the wind and the sea on that occasion he still does even today to the winds and the storms
that crop up in people’s lives. He calmed them. Today, Jesus is not asleep, he
is fully awake so let us like the disciples did in the boat, call on him to
rebuke the storms in our lives, so that all will be calm again.
